Foods to Avoid

Hard or sticky foods can break off brackets, bend wires and loosen bands, which, in turn, will extend your treatment time. Foods high in sugar content may cause cavities, calculus buildup, and stains on your teeth. For your orthodontic treatment to progress smoothly, there are certain types of foods that should be avoided while wearing braces.

Avoid Eating These Things:

1. Hard foods

Anything that is hard or crunchy should not be chewed while wearing braces. Strong forces from hard foods can break braces off from the teeth and slow down tooth movement. Damaged appliances will extend treatment time. Extended treatment time will increase the risk of cavities and permanent stains on your teeth.

2.Sticky foods

Braces and bands can be broken or loosened by sticky foods. Wires can also be distorted. Again, this could extend your treatment time.

3.Anything high in sugar content

Extra effort is required to clean teeth while wearing braces. Sugar will feed the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Soda and sports drinks can be very detrimental to the health of your teeth. Try to avoid these beverages, and if you must drink them, try to limit consumption to mealtimes. If you do eat any foods high in sugar, brush your teeth immediately.
